The truth is, everyone is an artist! Everyone gets dressed and usually their clothes match and they look pretty snazzy. The more art skills you learn, the more confidently—and joyfully—you can create!

A little bit of fear or guilt is okay, because it may get you going. But a big load of shame and discouragement is not good, because it won’t motivate you. Remember, there are seasons for everything. In the winter, it looks like things aren’t growing, but it’s an important part of the creation cycle. Maybe it’s winter and you are resting or gathering ideas. But maybe it’s a different season of your life and you can do something today? Monday through Friday I study my scriptures and watercolor a floral border in my scripture journal. It’s better than nothing! You can do something too! I believe in you. But more importantly, God believes in you and wants you to accomplish your dreams and goals.

You don’t need hours to be an artist. A few creative minutes add up. Don’t wait for life to be perfect to begin. Start tiny—even two minutes counts. Track it on a calendar, a tracking log, or with your accountability buddy. Can you imagine how much better you’ll be in one year, even at 2 minutes a day?

Because your dreams matter and you matter! Creating can bring joy, growth, and beauty to ordinary days. God is a creator and He created you. After he created the world He looked at it and enjoyed the work of His hands. He wants you to create too! Creating is healing. It helped me through so many dark and difficult days. It can help you too.

It isn’t supposed to be! Paint on a rock. Draw in your journal. Decorate a notecard. Make something imperfect and wonderful. Your work matters. It’s a journey, and if you don’t get started, you won’t discover the joy all along the way.
