Seeking the Good, the True, and the Beautiful

Art can inspire, heal, and lift our souls! Here are six simple ways to help children recognize God's beauty and discover the joy of creating.

1. Art Can Steal Time: Slow Down and Wonder

Pause. Ponder. Feel. Wonder. How did you preserve the beauty? Did you write about it, tell someone or just save it in your "heart drive?"

Have you ever seen something so beautiful it took your breath away? Beauty invites us to slow down, reflect, and appreciate God's gifts.

2. God Is the Master Artist

Mountains. Flowers. Stars. Clouds. Oceans.

Nature is God's art gallery! Every sunset, snowflake, and flower reveals His creativity. Ask your children, Why do you think God designed it this way? What might He be teaching us?

3. Art Awakens Imagination

Dream. Discover. Envision. Create.

In 1957, psychologist Harold McCurdy studied 20 historical geniuses and identified three childhood patterns: interested adults, independent exploration, and rich imaginations of fantasy.

When my children were little, we had a wonderful afternoon routine. After lunch, we'd read a scripture story and a fairy tale, followed by a two-hour nap. It was a peaceful reset filled with wonderful stories and imagination!

Give children time to dream, read, explore, and create!

4. Seek the Good, the True & the Beautiful

What we behold shapes who we become.

Growing up our home was a visual feast! My mother couldn't afford expensive artwork, so she framed beautiful calendars, hung colorful quilts, and displayed pictures of Jesus, family, and historical reproductions of masterpieces.

Our walls told us what our parents valued.

I sometimes visit homes with beautiful furnishings but bare walls. It makes me wonder whether we're choosing what we truly love or simply following decorating trends.

Remember, our walls are silent teachers. Fill your home with art that inspires goodness, truth, beauty, and meaningful conversations.

5. Art Can Touch the Soul

Listen. Look. Imagine. Feel.

A beautiful painting, inspiring melody, or peaceful moment in nature can quiet our minds, lift our hearts, and help us feel God's love.

Sometimes beauty speaks to our souls when words cannot.

6. Create Beauty. Share God's Light.

Art lifts hearts and blesses lives.

Growing up in the 1980s, I spent far too much time watching television and playing Nintendo. I wanted to paint and create, but screens were easier.

One day, I decided to take a break from television and sugar. I felt better and suddenly had more time and energy for the things I actually loved.

Try a family experiment! Take a break from screens and desserts. Give children time, space, and simple art supplies. See what they create!

Encourage them to share their artwork. A handmade card, painting, or little drawing can brighten their day and someone else's too.

Art is a gift from God. Creating and sharing beauty is one way we can bless His children!

Krystal Meldrum

I have always loved to draw and paint, but I was the eldest child in a family of 11 children so I often needed to put my art aside and help my family. When I went to junior high and high school I was ready to learn how to become a real artist, but I didn’t get the fundamental tools I needed.  I felt like a bird in a cage that couldn’t give voice to my artistic dreams. I married my high school sweetheart Jeremy Meldrum and graduated from BYU with a BFA in Illustration. Finally, when I finished college I had the tools I needed to create!

Once again I put my art dreams on a shelf for 15 years so I could raise my own 6 children.  I am the proud mother of 1 daughter and 5 sons.  I kept my creative self alive all those years by writing in 20 different journals, scrapbooking, and becoming the Organized Queen Bee who teaches moms how to organize their homes and families at www.house-organization.com.  Now that my children are older, I paint 15-20 hours a week.  Finally, my dream to paint has taken flight!  Please check out my art on OrganizeYourJoy.com
